06Bank protection

A bank fails where water works against the ground. We protect the shoreline from the water — placing rock armour, grading slopes and building protective structures from floating platforms where the bank cannot be reached by land.

Working from the water

A good share of any bank cannot be reached by land: no access road, dense building, a protected zone. An excavator on a pontoon comes in from the water side and works off a floating platform held by an anchor spread. Material arrives by barge rather than by lorry through the city.

Rock armour and slope profile

Armour is placed in layers to the design slope profile — that is what decides whether it holds when the water rises and the ice moves. We place it with level control and grade the slope to the design geometry.

Below the waterline

Below the water's edge the result cannot be seen from the bank. Divers inspect the submerged part of the protection, record the state of the foundation and the placement of the rock, and hand the material over with the as-built documentation.
